Watch TCMI’s mission in action!

The TCMI Experience

Participation in TCMI is determined by audition, with students placed in ensembles based on experience and playing level. Returning students are challenged and placed in new groups.

Each Tuesday, small chamber music ensembles (4-6 students) receive a coaching from a member of the Tetra String Quartet and a block of time to rehearse on their own. These student-led rehearsals strengthen skills in leadership, listening, empathy, and creative problem solving. Tetra gives each group rigorous practice tools to score study, and plan their goals over each semester. Students may additionally participate in special guest masterclasses.

Students also participate in a conductor-less chamber orchestra (12-20 students) each Tuesday. This experience will allow students to exercise their chamber music skills on a larger scale while they prepare to perform a musical work without a conductor. This setting promotes the importance of feeling a collective group pulse, matching style and articulation, and gaining artistic independence.

Ensembles will perform in winter and spring culmination concerts, and are required to participate in two community service performances. Why do students learn to share music in the community? These may take place in a senior center, Azure Family Concerts for children on the autism spectrum, refugee centers, a non-profit organization's special event, or other setting where live music is rarely offered.
