TCMI July 2022 Culmination Concert

Saturday, July 15 at 10am

Saint Maria Goretti, Scottsdale AZ

The mission of the Tetra Chamber Music Institute (TCMI) is to train young musicians to perform in small ensembles with excellence and channel their creative strengths to effect positive change in themselves and the community. Founded by the Tetra String Quartet, TCMI is an afterschool chamber music program, the first of its kind in Arizona. As an alternative OR addition to youth orchestra programs, TCMI focuses on each student as an individual with the goal of nurturing each participant intellectually, emotionally, and musically.

Makenzie Porter, Violin

I like to doodle and I am learning German. I learned how to better communicate with my group and how to work together to fix problems.

Abbie Burdick, Violin

In my free time I love to read and draw. I learned that even when you are an inner voice you need to be loud.

Anise Covarrubias, Viola

A fun fact about me is I enjoy reading, and a pet I’ve always wanted is a snake. This week I learned how to play in an orchestra where you have to rely on other players for tempo, cues, and portrayal of mood.

Charlene Estrada, Cello

I am a frequent drummer and I like to cook. I learned to not be embarrassed about moving while playing cello.

Boismortier : Sonata Op. 34 for Three Violins and Cello

Kaiwen Xu, Violin

A fun fact about me is that I like chicken. This week I learned to cooperate better!

Eden Lindsay, Violin

A fun fact about me is I love cross country and swim team. This week I learned how much chamber music is about communicating and balance.

Jinyao Audrey Zhou, Violin

I have pet budgie and I have two brothers. This week I learned how to rehearse to play chamber music!

Lillian Petermann, Cello

I have a kind of weird hobby which is dog showing. I’ve been to Westminster which is the biggest dog show in the country! This past week, I’ve learned how hard it is to play music with people. The timing is the hardest part because if you don’t know what the tempo is, things get difficult.

Borodin : String Quartet No. 2

Jill Omerza, Violin

Music is my greatest passion. I also play the piano along with the violin. I like being around people and making new friends. In the past I have struggled with working with others because I didn’t build friendship first. I decided to be different and become friends with the other people in my quartet. I love how we were able to laugh and feel comfortable with giving each other feedback. This has definitely been one of the highlights of my summer.

Carlos Hernandez, Violin

I play the guitar, and have been playing it since 3rd grade, so for 7 years. I’ve loved it ever since I started it because I knew it would be a passion of mine. The challenge I overcame was that I played my part and thought it was boring, until I played with my group, so I realized that I needed to stay together with them and I manage to do it.

Adam Bitton, Viola

I play volleyball. I have 5 siblings. When I am older I would love to travel the world and learn about different cultures around the world. Something I learned this week is the importance of your connectivity as a quartet as well as how movement can bring your quartet together. I learned techniques to support the melody and let them shine. I really enjoyed learning how to communicate through my music.

Lily Walker, Cello

I love trying new things. That’s how I got to playing the cello. I’m also into wakeboarding, hanging out with friends, and sleeping. I was initially coerced into coming to TCMI by my friend, who will remain nameless, but now I’m really glad I came. I’ve met so many new people and have had such a fun time here. I’m glad I came with Jill, oh did I say her name? whoops.

Avison : Concerto in E minor, 3rd mvt

Praise Kim, Violin

I love creating and/or dancing to songs and I am going into the 5th grade. I enjoy making fruit smoothies, slashes, shakes, etc. I love when it rains and something I do with my friends is catch the rain. I learned that when I play chamber music, I feel free and excited to play with my group. Before I came to TCMI, I didn’t want to practice at all but now that I played chamber music, I actually want to play and practice violin!

Brielle Porter, Violin

I like to make pizza and I like art, swimming, and cooking. Something I discovered is if you work together it’s funner!

Dylan Haley, Violin

I have a dog called cannoli but we call her noli. She is 4 human years old and had 7 puppies. She is a rescue. I learned about shifts, dynamics, and lots more. I had lots of fun playing with other people this week.

Sue Bin Park, Cello

I really enjoy art, baking (bread, muffins, pastry). I have 2 dogs. I love them very much. I would like to visit the Louvre in Paris and also South Korea. I love to make topoki, a spicy Korean rise cake. I discovered that math isn’t really my thing, but I learned that math is very important in cooking/baking so I kinda expected it. I really enjoyed playing gauntlet with everyone and acting out in the goldilocks and the three bears. I learned movement is very important for music.

Schubert : Minuet from Symphony #3 (arr by D.M. Levenson)

Michael Zhang, Violin

I like to play violin. I have a twin sister and an older one. Playing orchestra is fun. Music can behave in different ways.

Preston Rule, Violin

I am very interested in golf. I take lessons for it and compete in tournaments. One time, I even got a hole-in-one! I hope to go to Scotland and play one of the first golf courses. I really enjoyed having our quartet parts come together, from being so separated to a unified group. I figured out that it doesn’t take long to get a piece mastered as a group.

Ben Park, Violin

A fun fact about me is that I like math and engineering a lot (more towards the tech side). This week, I loved meeting new people and cooperating with them by playing and talking with them!

Rachel Ostler, Violin

Some interests I have other than music are art, reading, and swimming. During TCMI I had a lot of fun playing chamber music and in my quartet even if I am the only girl in my quartet.

Stone : Second Miniature String Quartet

Kayden Karis, Violin

I want to go to college to become a music producer. I learned how I can use my bow to get the fullest sound out of my instrument.

Mattias Ortiz, Violin

I am interested in all sorts of things whenever I see something pop up and tend to get it right away. I have discovered many different talents throughout my life, and sometimes I tend to get a little nervous, but I overcame it.

Joshua Clay, Viola

I love D&D and I’ve dyed my hair a lot. I recently switched from violin to viola. During this week of playing, I learned to work with a group very well. I also enjoyed the challenge of playing chamber music.

Sebastian Navarro, Cello

I am extremely passionate about the sport of wrestling. I first started wrestling in the 7th grade. At some point, I would be honored to travel to the country of Japan. During the course of this week I discovered many flaws and weaknesses I possess. With this knowledge, I have asked questions, watched videos, and watched many of the other cellists in the other chamber music groups.

Bolzoni : Minuetto for String Quartet

Sarah Jester, Violin

A fun fact about me is that I love cats and have 3 of them at home. During this week of playing music, I enjoyed getting to know other musicians.

Brenda Hernandez, Violin

A fun fact about me is that my main instrument is violin, but I also play viola. A challenge I overcame was putting all the other instrument parts together and balancing our sound.

Jazmin Flores, Viola

A fun fact about me is that I love frogs. Something I enjoyed was working with others who were also eager to learn and adapt.

Tanith Ritko, Cello

A fun fact about me is I also play TCMI year round on violin. This was my first time playing cello at TCMI. It was very fulfilling to play with others and make music that I hope others will enjoy. I loved Taylor forcing us to move in our seats more because it made us sound 100 times better.

Mozart : String Quintet No 4 in G minor

Laura Llames, Violin

I have a pet cat named Cappuccino. I learned about score study which improved our quintet!

Grace Llames, Violin

A fun fact about me is that I am a twin. I like cats and trying new foods. I enjoyed individual practice with my group, it was always enjoyable, helpful, and funny.

Jena Lee, Viola

I love spending time with friends. I enjoyed playing this piece with my group!

Jae-hyeok Moon, Viola

A fun fact about me is that I also play the electric guitar. I definitely learned more about how to play chamber music, especially in smaller groups; all the communication, connection, and trust you need to build in order to play successfully.

Israel Kim, Cello

A fun fact is that I can eat paper and it tastes ok to me? I discovered that viola quintets exist because I thought nobody would take the time to make one, only trios or quartets.

Schubert: Quintet Op. 163

Arianna Hernandez, Violin

I have 3 cats, 2 boys named Saffron and Zizou, and 1 girl named Cece. I love making matcha lattes and just before this camp I came back from South Korea from a different program I attended. During this week my group really put in the effort to practice as our piece is around 15mins long. For myself, I learned to play out more even if I feel unsure about a certain section as what’s important as a group is to continue if anything happens and not show it, but continue playing professionally.

Carlos Gamez, Violin

I’ve been playing music for almost my entire life and it has always been my passion! In addition to violin I play piano, guitar, and ukulele, all of which I love to make music on! Something that really clicked for me this week was how much I absolutely love making music with others. I can honestly say there’s nothing more I love than playing music with others who also have a passion for music. Best week of my summer!!

Hina Allen, Viola

I am actually from Washington State, I flew to Arizona to visit my aunt. I also have two pet chinchillas named Dolce and Dongo. I really enjoyed connecting with like-minded musicians this week. This camp really challenged me to think outside of the box and step out of my comfort zone, which will be very helpful in the future.

Abraham Kim, Cello

I play the cello. I have been playing for four years and I also play the piano. I am a member of PYS and will also be attending YOLA. (I love to practice). I have learned that silent communication is very important for a group to be together. I also found out that movement can also help to communicate to each other and also the audience. I made new friends with the same love and passion for music and I hope to work with them again someday.

Charlie Pabst, Cello

I have 6 siblings and I enjoy playing volleyball and cello. One thing I enjoyed about this week was meeting new people. I loved working on this piece because there are so many intricacies that can be explored. Although we worked on it 2 hours a day for a week, there was so much more to be explored.

Hofeldt : Lullaby

Spata : Gauntlet
